How AI is Transforming Filmmaking
AI is not new to filmmaking; it has been with us since the mid-20th century. And ever since then, AI has been transforming filmmaking in groundbreaking ways in all three states of filmmaking: pre-production, production, and finally post-production.
Pre-Production:
The Director now has the option to use AI like ChatGPT to generate ideas, chooses one of those ideas, and creates a story for that (sometimes the Director would give the idea and tell the AI to create the story and alter it to what they want ).
Then the story is given to the Writer, and he writes the script for the movie by constantly discussing it with the Director and changing the script if anything needs to be added. This is one of the parts where AI has not come into yet, but in storyboarding it is a completely different story.
In Storyboard, they use a AI tool called “ Midjourney “ to create a storyboard for a scene were they type what happens in the scene and Midjourney would create multiple storyboards and when the Writer or the Director chose one and it would do the location scouting by itself ( or a location similar to the one in the storyboard ) and it’s details of the location to the filming team.
Now coming to Casting, sometimes the Director would ask the AI to find the actors to the character role they want to find and it does give a list of actors that would help them for casting.
Production:
While filming the AI named “Sora” creates shots scenes with simple text based commands and LED screens are used to show a more realistic background than Green screens ( and no need to go to the real location and shoot the scenes there ).
And yet, even with all the advanced features present the AI software would face some difficulties in creating the same character again in the next scenes which would limit the storytelling of what a filmmaker can do.
Post-Production
Here AI has already started taking over the system around the world of filmmaking in post-production state, mainly in the VFX part. And AI tools like content aware fill would help the filmmakers to move unwanted elements and filters in the background and something like Adobe Sensei helps the editor to create a variety of menial editing tasks.
