Applying Binary Opposition Theory

Binary Opposition Theory

Anthropologist "Claude Lévi-Strauss" created the theory of Binary Opposition because he thought that stories frequently used opposing concepts to convey meaning. These "opposing forces", such as good versus evil, light versus dark, aid in forming a story. They are particularly effective in genres like "horror ", where abrupt contrasts between opposites heighten suspense and terror.

How Our Film Opening Employed Binary Opposition

From the very beginning of the planning process, we concentrated on constructing our story around "key opposites." The audience was able to "feel" the tension rather than merely observe it because these contrasts were not only present in the narrative but also visually represented.

What This Taught Us

Since genuine tension arises from opposites, we centered the story around them. Every change, from group to fear, from comfort to. It was deliberate to be either a friend to the threat or alone. We ensured that the audience could experience the tension rather than merely observe it by employing contrast in the narrative and images.
