Genre Conventions

The seven genres that I chose are action, horror, comedy, thriller, science fiction, romance, and mystery. I studied these very intimately through every aspect: all the things that summed up anything for these genres-extreme detail covering their sources, types of characters within, cinematography, sound, and editing. It all got organized and put into a spreadsheet.

Action is thematically based on a principle of injustice or revenge with dramatic,
fast-moving sequences, thrilling stakes, and uncertainty intended to keep an audience riveted. Explosions, high-speed chases, and thrilling combats are usually featured, with heroes being outnumbered but eventually winning.

Horror is perhaps my favorite genre, even though it terrifies me. Ghostly apparitions, creepy surroundings, and psychological dilemmas are all horrors. It tends to follow rigid frames, but suspense against the unknown lures me into it. But I won't dare view it all alone at night!

Comedy is dependent on humor, wordplay, and storytelling. I prefer it blended; however, it works with audience laughter combined with on-screen effects a lot in sitcoms like The Mask a movie in which I grow-up with.

The thrillers are real and full of suspense with possible unpredicted twists at the end of dark endings. Mainly, I am not a great fan of thrillers, but I can't deny that they excel in gripping stories and nail-biting sequences that echo long after the movie is over.

I really enjoy watching Sci-fi, particularly stories that merge science, futuristic technology, and logic—much like Star Wars. These narratives often explore the unknown, pushing the boundaries of imagination until they feel almost real. However, their complexity can be overwhelming; with his thoughts not deeply rooted in these themes, he sometimes finds the intricate storylines confusing.

Everyone loves a Romance because it's emotionally laden and indeed very nice to listen to. I am a K-drama addict, and I love how different cultures have very unique styles and storylines, which really makes the genres diverse and relatable to the world's audience.

However, researching has helped me develop one precious skill that I didn't think I would need. Dissecting the conventions of a genre has really honed my skill in analyzing storytelling and thus taught me to approach creative projects from deeper angles in understanding how each genre really works.

Here is the spreadsheet for the research I did :
